Mai Liao Harbour Dredging


As one of the leading industrial conglomerates of the country, Formosa Plastics Group (FPG) among other activities is operating the 6th Naphta Cracker Complex at Mai Liao on the western shore of Taiwan.

FPG was granted the concession for development of a 2.250 ha site, which will be reclaimed in several phases. On the site, FPG has built an oil refinery with a daily capacity of 450.000 barrels of crude, and a naphta cracking plant with a production capacity of 1,35 million tons of ethylene per year. The Group also funded, built and operates Mai Liao Harbour. By contrast to the two other development areas which together make up the Yun Lin Offshore Industrial Park, Mai Liao development is not undertaken by the Industrial Development Board, a public agency, but by a private company.

Formosa Plastics Group operates a fleet of more than 70 vessels, many of which are large crude carriers. Since VLCC’s with a capacity in excess of 280.000 DWT  currently have to carry reduced load when entering the harbour, Mai Liao Harbour needs to be adapted in order to enable smooth and unhindered manoeuvring of the VLCC’s. This is being executed in several phases.

Our solution

Between 1997 and 2000 Dredging International carried out a first dredging and reclamation campaign, removing a total of 26 million m³.

Under this contract, Dredging Interrnational dredged Mai Liao Harbour to a depth of minus 24 m in the harbour area and the inner channel, and minus 22 m in the entrance channel.

Main plant assigned to this campaign were the cutter suction dredgers Cap Martin, Vlaanderen XI and Vlaanderen XIX.

The second campaign completed the overall Mai Liao Harbour Development Plan.

Total quantity dredged was about 13 million m³, of which 5.7 million m³ of sand was used for reclamation. It was executed between June 2009 and April 2010 with the trailing suction hopper dredger ‘Nile River.’ The entrance channel was brought to minus 24 m and the outer channel to minus 25 m. This contract also involved the reclamation of the south breakwater triangle, including topsoil works. The reclamation was carried out by pumping ashore at distances between 1 km and 1.5 km.
